MaxxMMA Reflex Bag 2.0

Introduction

I am Justin Fukunaga, a Doctor of Physical Therapy, and I own and instruct a program called Knockout Movement Disorders (KOMD). Jimmy Lin, also a Doctor of Physical Therapy and strength and conditioning specialist, assists in teaching and developing programs for KOMD. KOMD focuses on providing health and fitness interventions for individuals with Parkinson’s Disease and other related movement disorders.  KOMD includes skilled boxing, strength and conditioning, movement mastery, nutrition in either group classes or one on one sessions.

I will focus on the benefits of boxing for those with Parkinson’s disease and how the MaxxMMA equipment assist in improving fitness in this population.  This is a mobile company therefore equipment set-up and transportation are important factors for the programs.  I did a review previously on the MaxxMMA air/water heavy bag but I will focus on the Reflex Bag 2.0 in this article.

Assembly and Set-up

I was impressed with The Reflex Bag 2.0 assembly.  There are minimal parts required and they are easily transported in the trunk of my car in one box. The Reflex Bag only requires a small tool (included in the package) to put together and can easily be broken down as well.  They include 2 sizes of inflatable punching bags for adjusting challenges of the target.  I also appreciated the ability to adjust height of the target bag and also the stiffness of the stand. This adds a lot of variability for my clients with different abilities.

Benefits with Parkinson’s Disease

Skilled boxing has been shown to be one of many exercise interventions to improve dynamic balance, speed of movement, reaction time, and overall quality of life of those suffering from Parkinson’s disease.  I’m able to use the Reflex Bag 2.0 as a useful tool in making boxing fun and effective in training.  For example, I’m able to set the bag up in front of the class members so they can focus on hitting the target both while it’s static and while it’s moving. This helps in developing their reaction time, eye hand coordination, balance, and movement speed; which all decline with Parkinson’s disease progression.  I can see how the participants react differently to the Reflex Bag 2.0 compared to other equipment including quicker punches, keeping their hands up by their face to defend the oncoming bag and moving their head and trunk in reaction to the bag recoil.  The bag height adjustment allows participants who can’t safely stand to participate and use the bag in a seated position.  This insures everyone at all levels can use this bag for exercise.

As far as I’ve witnessed, Jimmy and I are the only Doctors of Physical Therapy who use the Reflex Bag 2.0 for individuals with Parkinson’s in providing a unique, fun, and effective exercise routine.  Prior to including the Reflex Bag 2.0 my clients used focus mitts, shadow boxing, and the MaxxMMA heavy bag which were all important for the goals of the boxing exercise. However, including the Reflex Bag increases the value of the program by adding a new skill to work on balance, reaction time, and speed of punches.

Boxing Gloves and Shirt

Jimmy and I recently had the opportunity to use the MaxxMMA 12oz boxing gloves and T-shirt.  I really like the look and feel of the boxing gloves. It provides good overall hand and wrist support and works well with the MaxxMMA heavy bag and Reflex Bag 2.0.  I also like the MaxxMMA T-shirt which is the perfect fit, not too tight or too loose, and the material feels great as it is light and moves with you.  I also enjoy the moisture wicking technology which keeps me dry and doesn’t feel heavy with sweat after long workout. I experienced this with other workout shirts that hold on to sweat and feel heavy.  I will likely order more of these shirts for myself and members of the KOMD class in the future.

ALL-NEW Reflex Bag Demonstration and Review

MaxxMMA has sent me the production model of their All-New Advanced Adjustable Speed Freestanding Reflex Bag. I am going to do a break down on the features and show how well this punching bag is put together. I will demonstrate some of the fighting techniques I like to train on the bag for Muay Thai, MMA, and Boxing.

This is a Cobra bag style punching bag that you can do countless Muay Thai drills, MMA drills or Boxing drills. They have made the base heavier than most other bags on the market and included several items like an exercise/fitness bag for weight, bag gloves, and a bag pump.

Before everyone comments, YES I know my T-shirt has a rip in it. I ripped it in MMA practice and didn't have a spare before shooting the video and I didn't want to wait to shoot this video. If you've trained at all you get used to having a few holes in your shirts, so you can laugh and troll all you like. ha-ha!

Review for 3ft Water/Air Heavy Bag Model Number: X2HBA301-a

I’m Justin Fukunaga a physical therapist who instructs a boxing program specifically for those with Parkinson’s Disease. I also have assistance from my colleague Jimmy Lin who is also a physical therapist. My goal was to get something affordable, portable, safe, effective, and easy to use. So far, the heavy bag I received through eeMore have exceeded my expectations. I use the heavy bag for my Parkinson’s Disease class members to punch two times per week and will soon be offering a boxing fitness class at a local CrossFit gym. For myself, I hit the bag several times per week for my own training.

Ordering and processing:

I ordered the 3ft water/air heavy bag and was very pleased with the speed of processing and delivery. From the moment the company received my payment from paypal, an order was placed and I received the product via postal service quickly. This is saying a lot since I am located in Hawaii and most shipped items take a week or longer. The price was also very reasonable for the heavy bag.

Set-up:

From the very beginning, the kit offers everything you need to fill the heavy bag from your home or anywhere with a faucet. Directions were clear and simple which allowed us to fill the bag to the proper weight and firmness. Each bag came with a hand pump to fill the air portion of the bladder and a tube to funnel water into the bag without any mess! We literally used both the bathroom sink in the gym to fill the bag with water. No special hose or attachment required. The whole process to fill the bag to 90lbs took less than 10 minutes.

Trial run:

Both Jimmy and I who had experience with boxing and kickboxing took turns punching the heavy bag with everything we had. The feel of the bag was great which absorbed a lot of the force of the punch which is good for two reasons. 1) this decreacreased the chances of injury to my clients who are mostly elderly. Traditional filled heavy bags sometimes deliver the force of the punch back to the hands causing wrist and hand injuries. This feel also simulated punching someone in the body, perfect for fighters in training. 2) The bag had minimal sway which allowed for consistent punch combinations without needed another person holding it steady. I’ve also used the bag with my participants who also gave good feedback on the feel of the punch. The Parkinson’s boxers need some feedback to insure their punch technique is correct.

Size and mobility:

The 3ft size of this bag is perfect for my class as I plan to be able to set up and break-down bags for easy portability. I can fold the emptied bags up and put them in the trunk if my car to teach a class nearly anywhere I can hang it which would be extremely difficulty with a traditional standard heavy bag. The 3 foot length is long enough for an appropriate target but short enough to easily move it around. I hang each bag up and take them down after each class and I can do this quickly with this size of bag. The CrossFit gym will also need the bags out of the way when they are lifting weights and the ability to hang them and take the down adds a new component for exercise.

Overall benefits:

Boxing has been found to be a beneficial exercise intervention for those with Parkinson’s Disease. It’s complex skilled movement, speed of movement, eye hand coordination, footwork, balance and posture stability, all contribute to improved functional movement in those with this disease. Most of all it is empowering and all those who start boxing and hit this bag feel strong. There’s not many exercise programs for this population that can combine all these aspects both physically and mentally. Hitting the heavy bag is a great cardiovascular workout that involves the full body, from lower extremity to trunk, to upper extremities. Hitting the heavy bag is fun and great for stress relief making this mode of exercise gratifying once you get into it.

I highly recommend this heavy bag for coaches, trainers, fellow physical therapists.

Please see this sample video of us hanging the bag, and punching it as hard as possible. You can see the slow motion capturing the bag absorbing and dissipating the force of the punch.
