Mixed Martial Artist Dies in Aberdeen

sports equipmentStudies show that 18.1 million Americans have participated in karate or some other form of martial art at least once in the past year, a compelling figure in a nation where less than 5% of adults participate in 30 minutes of physical activity every day. But while most of these experiences will be very positive and cause no injuries, martial arts are just like any other contact sport in that they require the proper sports equipment to keep their athletes safe. This fact was proven recently when an unnamed mixed martial artist collapsed after an amateur bout in Washington State and later died at an area hospital.

According to the Associated Press, the fighter finished a match at the SouthShore Mall in Aberdeen, WA on Saturday, April 25. While witnesses reported that the man, an Aberdeen local, appeared exhausted from the fight, there were no other signs that anything was amiss. However, he collapsed upon returning to his dressing room, where a fight promoter later found him. Unfortunately, the fighter did not respond to CPR and had no pulse, causing him to be transported to a local emergency room. He was later transferred to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle, where he died on Monday evening after suffering kidney failure.

While details about the man's injuries have not been released, a study of kickboxing participants showed that the head, neck and face area is the most commonly-injured bodily region in the sport, followed by the lower extremities. Because damage to these areas can often result in serious damage, sparring gear and other forms of MMA equipment are often recommended to help lower instances of injury. However, it is not currently known what type of sports equipment the fighter was using, if any.

Some critics of mixed martial arts and similar disciplines will likely see this case as proof of how dangerous the sport can be. However, it is important to remember that a number of common athletic pastimes can also end in injury and even death. These physical activities rely on sports equipment to reduce these terrible accidents, and martial arts are no exception. Moreover, now that athletes can buy MMA gear online as well as in person, this important gear is easier to find and buy than ever before. Want to stay safe in your next match? Make sure your sports equipment is up to the task.
